We are a family run full line model train store that carries HO, HOn3, N, Z, Lionel and brass. While we carry the newest products, we also have used items.

Our store offer sales, special orders, service, repairs and DCC installation/programming. We do consignments and purchase collections.

The store is located in the Hollywood District in Portland and started out in the basement of an old Fred Meyer building in 1993. In 2004 we moved three blocks to our current location.

Credit Cards

We accept the following credit cards/debit cards: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover. There is no surcharge for using your credit card to make purchases unless the purchase is less then $5.00. Charges less then $5.00 will incur a $0.35 charge. Please be sure to provide your exact billing address and telephone number (i.e. the address and phone number your credit card bank has on file for you). Incorrect information will cause a delay or cancellation in processing your order. Your credit card will be billed upon shipment of your order. Exception: Reservation items will be charged for required deposits.

Money Orders, Cashier’s Checks, Company Checks, & Personal Checks

We accept money orders, personal checks, and company checks in U.S. Dollars only. Orders are processed upon receipt of a money order or check. For personal and company checks, please allow up to 10 banking days after receipt for clearance of funds before the order is processed. We cannot guarantee the availability of a product by the time funds clear or payment is received. We will charge a $35 fee on all returned checks.

Multiple Product Orders

For a multiple product order, we will make every attempt to ship all products contained in the order at the same time. Products that are unavailable at the time of shipping will be shipped as they become available, unless you inform us otherwise. You will only be charged for products contained in a given shipment, except reservation items requiring deposits, plus any applicable shipping charges. You will only be charged for shipping at the rate quoted to you on your purchase receipt. The entirety of this shipping charge may be applied to the first product(s) shipped on a multiple shipment order.

Order Acceptance Policy

Your receipt of an electronic or other form of order confirmation does not signify our acceptance of your order, nor does it constitute confirmation of our offer to sell. The Hobby Smith reserves the right at any time after receipt of your order to accept or decline your order for any reason.

These Conditions will supersede any terms and/or conditions you include with any purchase order, regardless of whether The Hobby Smith signs them or not. We reserve the right to make changes to this site and these Conditions at any time.

Out-of-Stock Products

We will ship your product as it becomes available. Usually, products ship the next day if ordered by 4:00 pm, or by the next business day if your order is received after this time and for orders received on Saturday, Sunday or any major holiday. However, there may be times when the product you have ordered is out-of-stock which will delay fulfilling your order. We will keep you informed of any products that you have ordered that are out-of-stock and unavailable for immediate shipment. You may cancel your back ordered product at any time until the order has been processed and is in route from our distributor.

Returns

Merchandise Returns

  • You have 30 days to exchange an item.
  • Original receipts are required
  • All book and video / DVD sales are final.
  • Shipping and Handling charges are non-refundable, except if incorrect merchandise is shipped.
  • You have 15 days to return an item. Returns are subject to a 15% restocking charge.
  • The default method of reimbursement for returns will be a credit to the credit card/PayPal used to place the order.
  • All sales are final on any opened train set as well as red-stickered items, consignment items, used items, special orders, DCC items and systems.

Damaged Items

  • If the damage is visible from the outside, contact the carrier (Fed Ex, US Mail, UPS) right away. We can help with this if you lost your tracking number.
  • Any product returned to us as defective, damaged, parts missing, etc. must have a document attached explaining exactly what the defect is. You must include a copy of the invoice with the item. Return must have the original box and packing and not have been abused in any way. Defective, damaged goods and parts missing must be verified by an employee before a credit is given.
  • Defective items from the following companies must be returned to the manufacturer for replacement / repair. (Please let us know if you need a phone number or address for a particular manufacturer.)

    • MTH - Mikes Train House
    • NCE - North Coast Engineering
    • TCS - Train Control Systems
    • ESU - Electronic Solutions Ulm
  • Any product damaged as a result of shipping, requires the notification of the shipping department and/or the General Manager. They will advise the method by which the product is to be shipped back. Please retain the damaged shipping box and all contents for the claims agent.
  • Claims for damages will be handled by the shipping department. Upon processing and receiving the reimbursement for the claim, we will then reimburse you for the damaged product(s).
  • Contact the carrier (Fed Ex, US Mail, UPS) directly for items lost or stolen during shipping.

Reservation/Special Orders

Due to the way many items are batch made, we recommend you reserve an item if you want to be guaranteed to receive it. We are glad to reserve any item for you.

If you don’t see an item your want or it is on sale at Walthers, let us know and we will get it for you. Deposits are required for Reservations and Special Orders.

Typical deposit is 15% of the purchase price.

Deposits will be refunded fully if an item is unavailable or canceled by the manufacturer. Special Orders/Reservations are not refundable or transferable if the order has been processed and is in route from our distributor.

Brass reservations require a 35% deposit at time of order and cannot be canceled. Refunds are only allowed if your reservation cannot be fulfilled by the manufacturer.

Special Orders

Once notified by store email or phone, you have 30 days to pick up or fully pay for your item(s). Special orders left over 30 days, can be either canceled, deposits forfeited and items put out for general sale.

Repairs/DCC Installations

Nearly all manufactures require that their products be returned directly to them in the event of a warranty issue.

For in store repairs and installation you will be notified by store email or phone. Once notified, you have 30 days to pick up, have the items shipped to you or fully pay for your item(s). Repairs left over 30 days can be canceled, deposits forfeited and items put out for general sale.

DCC Installation & Repair

DCC installations and repairs provided by The Hobby Smith are warranted by The Hobby Smith for 30 days.

Consignment Sales

We are glad to appraise and sell your items for you.

Our fees are the following:

  • Receive store credit 20% of the selling price
  • Receive non-store credit 25% of the selling price

Consignment item sale prices are established in agreement with the shop and item owner.

Shipping Policy

Shipping is done with USPS Ground Advantage unless specifically requested.

Shipping Time

Most orders will ship in 1-2 Days with many shipped the day after placing your order, provided the product ordered is in stock. Some items may require additional days to process. Orders are not processed or shipped on Saturday or Sunday, unless prior arrangements are made.

We cannot guarantee when an order will arrive. Consider any shipping or transit time offered to you by The Hobby Smith or other parties only as an estimate. We encourage you to order in a timely fashion to avoid delays caused by shipping or product availability.

Typographical Errors

In the event a product is listed at an incorrect price due to typographical error or error in pricing information received from our suppliers, The Hobby Smith shall have the right to refuse or cancel any orders placed for product listed at the incorrect price. The Hobby Smith shall have the right to refuse or cancel any such orders whether or not the order has been confirmed and your credit card charged. If your credit card has already been charged for the purchase and your order is canceled, The Hobby Smith shall immediately issue a credit to your credit card account in the amount of the incorrect price
